EXHIBITION & SYMPOSIUM: AUGUST 7 – 9, 2019

HYBRID MINDS / HYBRID BODIES is an exhibition and symposium bringing together an international group of researchers across the arts, ethics, medicine and the social sciences to investigate the complexities of heart transplantation. Hybrid Bodies is a research team who have worked together for over a decade looking at phenomenological, socio-political and pop-cultural aspects of heart transplantation and organ donation.

While significant biomedical research has been conducted into transplantation, few researchers have explicitly connected organ recipients’ and donors’ experiences and cultural views about transplantation to the notion of embodiment, kinship, and identity.

Along with papers and keynote presentations, the event will incorporate art works and creative projects grounded in hybrid art-medical research. The exhibition will feature the works of artists, Ingrid Bachmann (CA), Andrew Carnie (UK) and Alexa Wright (UK), Dana Dal Bo (CA) and Emily Jan (USA) and will focus on the experiences of donor families within transplantation.

We would like to thank the generous support of Concordia University, The Centre for Interdisciplinary Studies and Culture, the Health Initiative, and SSHRC.
