In Hybrid Bodies Phase II, the artists work in parallel with scientists and other team members to explore the emotional and psychological impact of heart transplantation on the families of the deceased donors. The long-term aims of this project are:  to enhance our understanding of donation experiences to help improve support for donor family members and transplant recipients; to inform policy-making around organ donation and transplantation; and to find ways of improving public understanding of the challenges that face both donor families, and organ recipients.

The University of Southampton and the Winchester School of Art supported a two-day workshop and symposium in conjunction with an ‘in progress’ exhibition of artworks created in response to interviews with families whose loved ones have donated organs. The works presented by the artists aim to interpret some of the issues that face donor families for a general audience.
